The much talked about fashion-music show ‘Music Meets Runway’ has come and gone but the events of the night will be on the lips of fashion pundits and music critics for more than a while.
The show took place on Saturday, July 9, 2011at the new Expo Hall of the Eko Hotel and Suites (which has become the most sought after venue to host classy events these days). From the beautiful and colourful designed wears, the models strutting down the runway to some top notch performances; it was surely a night not to be missed. And if you did miss it, well too bad.
Call it a fashion-style concert or concert-style fashion show, guests were eager to watch how one stage would accommodate the combination of Music and Fashion. And don’t forget the whole drama that came before the event – Weren’t we all excited to hear US Model Amber Rose would be hosting the event? Even her nude pictures that hit the blogsphere about a week ago further fuelled our appeal to see the sexy and sassy model only to hear that she wasn’t booked through the right agency and not even a strand of her white hair would be at the Expo hall.
As announced by the organizers, 6PM was kick off time, but as usual, the ‘African Time Syndrome’ set in and it wasn’t until 8:30PM the ball was set rolling, music filled the mighty hall which kept on accommodating guests who came in numbers all looking prim and sharp. It was a fashion show and everyone was out to impress! Cameramen had a filled day as they snapped and snapped fabulous looking celebs on the blue carpet.
By 8:45PM guests were well seated, the VIP tables were filled with all sorts of drinks, and it all looked classy. The ushers who were dressed in black didn’t have a hard time locating tables which were arranged in a way that everybody had a clear view of the runway. What was surprising was that there were no programme brochures. Also singers Tiwa Savage and UK based Dotstar who were billed to perform were not present at the gig
Hosts of the night R&B star singer Banky W and on-air-personality Toolz did a brilliant job anchoring the gig. Dressed in black native top and a pair of jeans, Banky was almost overshadowed by the very curvy-looking Toolz. But eventually, the chemistry between both personalities brought life to the show as they worked together to engage the crowd.
The first presentation was from Mo’Hits’ D’Prince and Vonne Couture. This was followed by upcoming rap group Show Dem Camp who didn’t quite seem to connect with the crowd as models trotted down the runaway dressed in Viva La Resistance.Shank delivered a slower version of his monster hit ‘Julie’ as he was accompanied by Toju Foyeh’s runway girls. Superstar Wizkid got on stage and performed hit songs from his album as models dressed in Obsidian walked through.
All was going well as guests were trying to adjust their eyes on the fabulous clothes at the same time watch the musicians perform, that’s when upcoming act Davidowas called upon to perform. He certainly didn’t bring his A-game on, as he left his backup singer to do more of the lip synching and he, the dancing. Accompanied by runaway models dressed by Grey (who was showcasing for the first time), he often pranced in their path, making their struts look awkward. After that, there was a short break…
Mo’Hits cohorts Dr. Sid and K-Switch came on stage with Republic Of Foreignerand gave a good account of themselves, better than his cold performance at the recently concluded MBGN beauty pageant. A mini competition was then held where a Samsung Galaxy Tab and a Galaxy S2 Mobile Phone won. Toolz returned on stage looking fab in a fitted lilac dress. Banky asked her to walk down the runway, she did and the crowd roared for obvious reasons…
Next to perform was Banky W and models dressed in Virgos Lounge. Sound Sultanlater came on stage and both performed ‘Very good bad guy’. Sasha joined Banky W and the Samsung ambassadors performed the Samsung theme song. It was quite an unnecessary performance and it was also cheeky to see Sasha fake phone calls with the Samsung phone. Next were Duncan Mighty and Meena; then Naeto Cand Babuhska.
Jennifer Olize, owner of La Reve Events (organizers of Music Meets Runway), came on stage to give a vote of thanks. ‘We just started but be sure to see us again, thanks to ours sponsors for believing in us’, Olize dressed in a shiny lemon green outfit said.
Young star Wizkid was called back onstage to end the show, runway models dressed in Tsemaye Binitie hit the stage as wizzy performed the rising hit jam ‘Pakurumo’.
It was a good show; looking at the controversy that almost marred the build up, it is impressive that Lagosians turned out to have fun; Amber or no Amber. Guests included Genevieve Nnaji, Frank Edoho, Soni Irabor, Uti, Mai Atafo, DJ Sose, Silverbird’s Vixen, ChyDinma, Andre Blaze, Alexander Amosu, Jay Jay Okocha, and many others. The models (from Elite Modelling agency) were graceful and fierce-looking when they wanted to be and DJ Caise was on point with the music.
