Wretch 32, Adele and Tinie Tempah were each shortlisted for four awards, which honour the best music of black origin, before the results tonight.

Kanya King, founder of Mobo, said: "Jessie's opening number, I think people will remember that for a long time to come.

"The excitement and atmosphere of our second year here in Glasgow has shown the love that the whole country has for Mobo. We felt so welcome the first time we came here, we didn't think it could be topped. This year has been a phenomenal success and we can't wait to return in 2013.

"It's been a great event that has welcomed some exciting new award winners to the Mobo roll of honour including the global superstar Adele, the UK's hot talent Tinchy Stryder and of course the fantastic Jessie J walking away with four awards."

American R&B group Boyz II Men were also awarded a prize for an outstanding contribution to music. It is just the second time the Mobo Awards have been staged in Scotland and the third year in a row the event has been staged outside London.

The awards were staged at Glasgow's Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) and were hosted by US star Jason Derulo and singer Alesha Dixon.

Glasgow staged the show in September 2009 - the first time it was held outside London.

Last year, the event was held in Liverpool.

Glasgow will also host the awards in 2013 and for the 20th anniversary of the event in 2015.

Stars on the red carpet included JLS, Myleene Klass, US singer Alexis Jordan, lingerie entrepreneur Michelle Mone, singer Katy B and Tinie Tempah.
Jessie J opened the show wearing a sparkling baseball hat and singing Do It Like A Dude.

Tinie Tempah was first up to collect his award, wearing a pair of shades.

He told the audience: "So, ladies and gentlemen and Mobos, honestly, when I came here today I wasn't really expecting anything, so I'm very, very grateful for this award. Thank you so much."

Jessie J was then announced as the winner of the best album award.

She said: "Wow. I did not expect to win that at all.

"I just want to say the biggest thank you to my fans because I watched this last year by myself in my living room and no one knew who I was and now I just won best album.

"That is epic. Thank you everyone."

The night also featured a tribute to Amy Winehouse, led by her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield, who sang Love Is A Losing Game.

Winehouse was found dead at her flat in north London on July 23. She was 27.

The Back To Black singer had fought a lengthy public battle with drink and drug problems but toxicology results showed there were no illegal substances in her system.

Speaking ahead of performing the tribute, Dionne, the 15-year-old who was also nominated for the best UK R&B/soul act, said: "It's amazing. It's really emotional but I'm really pleased to be doing it.

"Amy loved the Mobos, it was one of her favourite awards."

Speaking about the Winehouse tribute, Kanya King said: "It was very difficult in rehearsals as one would expect but we wanted to pay tribute to her."

The winners were voted for by the public.
